Select Area just doesnt seem to work at all

I setup my brush:
Size 1
Shape Cube
Type Fill (or overlay)
Mode Selection

Switch to selection item
select position 1 then position 2 (IN A STRAIT LINE) a few blocks later
the brush window comes up again
hit submit

Nothing Happens

Then I click on the ground with the brush tool
and a 3x3 stone layer pops up that is not aligned with my selected region.

I guess I just dont get it. how do I make a simple line of blocks?

Sounds like a bug. Does creating a bigger cuboid area work, or is that broken too?
