Play transition animation without changing/reloading scene

**Describe the feature**
It would be great if I could play a transition animation without having to load a new scene.


**Describe alternatives you've considered**
Currently the transition system is heavily connected to the scene loading system - I'd rather not discard the current scene and add a new one.
