Is the script compatible with the new UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra (UCG Ultra)?

Hi everyone 👋

I’m considering setting up Tailscale directly on the UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra (UCG Ultra) — the latest Ubiquiti router/firewall device running UniFi OS.

I’ve seen that this script works great on devices like the Dream Machine, Dream Router, and UDM Pro. However, I haven’t found any clear reference confirming whether it has been tested or confirmed to work on the UCG Ultra specifically.

So I’d really appreciate your help with a few questions:
1. Has anyone successfully installed Tailscale directly on the UCG Ultra using this script?
2. Are there any system differences (UniFi OS version, permissions, etc.) that could cause issues?
3. Does the script survive firmware updates on this model, or would it need to be reinstalled?

Any insights or experiences would be extremely helpful 🙏

I have a Cloud Gateway Ultra and it works for me. I'm on the early release track for updates, too (thought I always manually install them). I haven't had a firmware update since installing it but I'll let you know if it kills it. Most of the recent firmware updates have left installed packages like NexDNS, nano, and Acme.sh.

I was able to install on a new UCG-Ultra, but the speeds are abysmal even though the connections are all direct.

Same experience here on a UXG-Max. Installation worked fine, but I see much better upload speeds using the exit node on my Synology. Using the UXG exit node has awful upload speeds. Download speeds are comparable on both.

What kind of speeds are you seeing? I'm considering installing this on a UCG-Fiber to run Tailscale as a subnet router. After installation does Tailscale somehow appear as a visible interface in the Unifi management page or is this command-line only?

I have a 1GB fiber connection. Speed tests directly on the UXG-Max show that on both download / upload. However, referencing a prior comment, using the UXG as an exit node slows the upload to a crawl. It seems to be much better if I use a different exit node.

No, there is no visible interface. You run it via command line, then it will output an authentication link which you type in to connect the device to your Tailnet.
