added return to operator = function

@dssimmons , please check these changes. There are some things that need fixing, and I fixed them. Others, I wasn't so sure how to fix them without changing execution so I am leaving them in there with comments for your review.

I also want to add that there are a lot of warnings here that can mess up with the results. On your direction, I can keep pushing on this direction and fix all of them.

For the future, when you want to fix this, recompile with:
-Werror=return-type -Werror=delete-non-virtual-dtor -Werror=format-overflow
-Werror=reorder -Werror=misleading-indentation -Werror=maybe-uninitialized

This will force the make to quit on these dangerous warnings and will facilitate making fixes.
