P2D Fails on Mac M2 with New Thonny install

Brand new Thonny on mac m2. Unable to run my old files except for tkinter.

Why is it using an old py5??

Terminal ( using 'pip3 install py5') installs it here:
Requirement already satisfied: certifi>=2017.4.17 in /opt/miniconda3/lib/python3.12/site-packages (from requests>=2.31->py5) (2024.2.2)

Use Thonny to update py5 not Terminal cmd-line:
I used Thonny to upgrade py5 to latest py5 and that helped some; can now run more code.

But still left with same old gluegen_rt error that I had before when running this code:

Why is it using an old py5??

I have no idea. That version of py5 was released over 3 years ago. That old version did work just fine when it was current. If you are getting that error, I believe you have mixed python code and java code from two very different versions.

Look, the only version of py5 that I as the maintainer can support is the current version. There's a documented process for setting up and installing the latest version. As this is open source software, you are allowed to edit the code directly, but in that case you need to be responsible for investigating and solving problems that occur.

It is the current version (0.10.6.a0).

You keep blaming this problem on something that I did and that is just not the case. My edit was to fix a bug in your code that would not allow FX2D code to run in Windows (I'm on a mac). That recompiled py5.jar went over to a Windows box and fixed the bug. It was not installed on the Mac because there was no problem with FX2D on the Mac.

When code is changed things will break unless there is code to support backward compatibility. All I want to know is why does a brand new Thonny and py5 upgrade (plugin installs an old py5 version which I upgraded with Thonny) still look for macos-aarch64 when all the py5 natives have macosx-universal. As far as I am aware I had nothing to do with that. And I don't appreciate you closing all my threads!

If you are going to edit code, you need to run the build process to build the complete py5 library. The python code and java code must be in sync. The above problem occurs because you have mixed python code and java code from two different versions. It also explains the macos-aarch64 and macosx-universal symptoms. I don't understand what steps occurred to arrive at this point. I can't help you with debugging it.

Right now I would like to do a release for the thonny plugin. I didn't work on that all today. Once that's done, I'll work on stuff for the next py5 release.

I can't help you with debugging it.
If I can't debug it then I can't use it; sorry. If it ever gets better then maybe later. My advice is to take down the instructions on rebuilding the py5.jar because according to you it doesn't work. Best wishes.

I've seen Thonny pick old stuff myself, it is confusing and annoying.
Can you please try removing all the old Python & Python site-packages before reinstalling Thonny and creating a new env on Thonny?
I nuke everything and start over, I do it all the time on the places where I teach. It is some work to remove everything and to reinstall all my stuff, but it is the only way I can make stuff work in some cases.

After that you can try other things, rebuild the jar, etc. No hard feelings, you are such a great explorer of py5, I hope you can understand our desperation with this.

Found a workaround that works:

1. Go to one of those places where it looks for gluegen_rt and find the 'natives' folder.
2. Make a duplicate of the macosx-universal folder and rename it macos-aarch64.
3. Rerun the Thonny P2D demo and it runs as expected.
