Feature request: Improve subscription options for bulletins, maps, and warnings

Requestors: Meteo Burkina Faso and Kenya Meteorological Department

Background

Users should be able to subscribe easily to specific climate and weather products, including:

  • Bulletin types
  • Map types, organized by product category
  • CAP alerts

This request comes from agrometeorological users in Kenya and users of Meteo Burkina Faso.

There is also growing demand from downstream digital services that rely on meteorological information, including mobile applications used by farmers. Examples include:

These platforms may need automated and structured access to products so they can redistribute relevant information to hundreds or thousands of end users.

Proposed functionality

Redesign the subscription page to allow users to:

  1. Select the specific products they want to receive.
  2. Subscribe to individual bulletin types.
  3. Subscribe to specific map or product categories.
  4. Subscribe to warnings and alerts.
  5. Choose their preferred delivery method.

Possible delivery methods should include:

  • Email
  • RSS or Atom feeds
  • API subscriptions
  • Webhooks, where appropriate
  • Other machine-readable formats

The subscription process should be simple and accessible, for example through checkboxes, buttons, or a short form.

API requirements

The system should provide an API that allows external applications to:

  • Retrieve available subscription categories.
  • Subscribe to specific product types.
  • Subscribe to warnings by hazard, location, severity, or other relevant criteria.
  • Receive notifications when a new product or warning is published.
  • Access relevant metadata and product links in a structured format.

User stories

  • As a farmer, I want to subscribe to agrometeorological bulletins by email so that I receive relevant updates automatically.
  • As a mobile application provider, I want to subscribe to specific products through an API so that I can redistribute them to my users.
  • As an emergency-management user, I want to subscribe only to warnings affecting my area.
  • As a user, I want to choose which bulletin and map categories I receive so that I am not sent irrelevant information.

Acceptance criteria

  • Users can view all available subscription categories.
  • Users can select one or more bulletin, map, and warning types.
  • Users can subscribe through a simple web form.
  • Email subscriptions are supported.
  • At least one machine-readable subscription option, such as RSS, API, or webhook, is supported.
  • External applications can retrieve new products and warnings programmatically.
  • Users can update or cancel their subscriptions.
  • Subscription preferences are clearly grouped by product type.
  • The interface works well on both desktop and mobile devices.

A useful issue title would be: Enable product-specific subscriptions via email, RSS, API, and webhooks.
