Hi MeshCore team (@ripplebiz & maintainers),

This PR adds an experimental Dogechat bridge to the companion radio example, directly based on jooray's v0.1-bitchat release and feature/bitchat-bridge branch.

Changes:

  • Replaced all "bitchat" → "dogechat" (code, docs, build envs, etc.)
  • Added Dogechat-specific build targets (e.g., Heltec_v3_companion_radio_usb_dogechat, LilyGo_TDeck_companion_radio_usb_dogechat, etc.)
  • Updated README.md and added docs/dogechat-bridge.md with details & blog links

Pre-built releases in my fork: https://github.com/GreatApe42069/dogechatMeshCore/releases (Companion/Repeater/Room Server v0.1-dogechat)

Related:

Experimental but tested locally. Happy to adjust naming, make configurable, refactor, or add more features.

Thanks for considering — open to feedback! 🏴‍☠️🐕

Hello!

Thanks for the PR! I don't think this is something we are looking to maintain nor merge into the main repo at this time.
It would be best for you to run this as your own fork and see where things go.

I've never heard of Dogechat, and since you've mentioned you renamed all references of Bitchat to Dogechat, it would make me believe it's just a fork of Bitchat with a meme name...

Bridging chat across other platforms is an interesting idea, and I'm intrigued to see where the Bitchat version goes.
However, it would be my opinion that these bridges are more of a niche thing, and it doesn't make sense for us to maintain them officially. Probably best to remain as community efforts that are built as custom firmware.

I'll close this one out as not planned :)

@liamcottle, Thank you for reviewing the PR and for your thoughtful response, I appreciate the feedback and understand your perspective on keeping bridges like this as community-driven efforts rather than official integrations. Just to clarify a bit on Dogechat: while our Android app is indeed a fork of Bitchat (we released around the same time), we've tailored it specifically for the Dogecoin community with a fun, meme-inspired theme. We've also added several features that go beyond what Bitchat has, such as an enhanced geohash map with light/dark modes, heat map, and pulse map views; support for sending and viewing files, videos, photos, and voice notes (whereas Bitchat primarily handles voice and images), not to mention early implementation of a self reliant dogecoin wallet. Heres a few screenshot examples, showing video (MP4) and file (PDF) sharing in action:

Screenshot_20251017-142246_ogechat Dogechat also has gained some visibility organically, it's even featured on Grokipedia (https://grokipedia.com/page/Dogechat), though Bitchat isn't listed there yet. Sorry fam we're not backed by a millionaire like Jack Dorsey (former Twitter CEO), so our growth on app stores has been slower due to limited marketing resources, but we're building a dedicated community nonetheless. I'd love for you to check it out if you're interested! Here are some links:

No worries at all about closing the PR, I'll happily maintain the dogechat-bridge feature as a fork for the Dogechat community. It's a great way to extend off-grid messaging for the world, and I'm excited to see how bridges evolve across platforms. Thanks again! Best, 🏴‍☠️ GreatApe42069.eth 🏴‍☠️𝕏Đ (x.com/Greatape42069E)
